Today, these zones already have a national distribution and occupy a total of about 8% of the country’s mainland. This work discusses, firstly, the structural context of the Portuguese forest, which allows for the implementation of a management based on the cooperation of non-industrial forest owners: property structure and management objectives of the owners. Secondly, a diversity of types of cooperation that can be applied in this context is presented. Finally, this work demonstrates the territorial and socio demographic variety of the ZIF zones, concluding that the capacity of application of these management models must attend to this diversityporforest intervention zonesprivate forestforest ownersforest managementcooperationCooperação na gestão florestal.
