We found that the attention given to strategic variables is positively associated with profitability and negatively associated with firms' cash flows. This negative relation is likely to be a result of both a recent investment in new technology and an increasing competitive environment within the Portuguese financial services industry. The results, although significant for the entire industry, have a different pattern when banks are segregated from insurance companies.
