His first article, published in 1970, had an almost visionary title: ‘A geografia e os problemas urbanos’ (Geography and Urban Problems). His work combines empirical practices with demanding reflections on the methodological options. Above all, Abreu was an urban geographer who from the early 1980s onward specialized in the field of historical geography applied to the territorial formation and urban evolution of Rio de Janeiro.
