A primeira surgiu em 2009 por um anónimo, e desde então não têm parado. Já são conhecidas em todos os cantos do mundo e prometem revolucionar o dinheiro como o conhecemos. A sua regulação é ainda um tema em debate a nível mundial, algo que tem feito soar alarmes em governos e Bancos Centrais, que receiam implicações financeiras. Ao longo dos últimos anos, a sua credibilidade tem aumentado, no entanto, a desconfiança e as características negativas mantêm-se, algo que será abordado nesta investigação. O presente trabalho foca-se no estudo da evolução das criptomoedas, nas suas características e principais desafios para a economia mundial. Além disso, esta dissertação pretende também perceber como é que se encontra o conhecimento nacional sobre este tema recente na nossa economia. De modo a suportar a investigação foi realizada uma análise quantitativa através de um questionário online. Esta análise contou com 309 participantes de uma amostra aleatória. Os resultados demonstraram que a moeda é recente e a sua perceção ainda não está bem assimilada junto da sociedade, que ainda apresenta escassez de informação. Os resultados permitiram retirar algumas implicações teóricas e práticas no domínio das criptomoedas e do comportamento do investidor, identificar algumas limitações, nomeadamente em relação a estudos empíricos nacionais, e possíveis investigações futuras relacionadas com a regulação e as moedas digitais dos Bancos Centrais.Analysis of the monetary phenomenon that are cryptocurrencies. The first was created in 2009 by an anonymous, and since then they haven't stopped. They are already known in all over the world and promise to revolutionize money as we know it. Its regulation is still a topic of debate worldwide, something that has raised alarms in governments and Central Banks, who fear financial implications. Over the last few years, its credibility has increased, however, distrust and negative characteristics remain, something that will be addressed in this investigation. The present work focuses on the study of the evolution of cryptocurrencies, their characteristics, and main challenges for the world economy. In addition, this dissertation also intends to understand how national knowledge is found on this recent topic in our economy. To support the investigation, a quantitative analysis was carried out through an online questionnaire. This analysis included 309 participants from a random sample. The results showed that the currency is recent, and its perception is still not well assimilated by society, which still has a lack of information.
