Tratam-se de atores coletivos que visam defender os interesses e direitos dos doentes, ou prestar auxílio aos mesmos e às suas famílias. Tendo em vista estes objetivos estas organizações têm desenvolvido a sua atividade em vários campos da saúde, servindo de interlocutores e fatores de pressão junto dos restantes atores nesta área: a comunidade científica, os profissionais de saúde, a indústria farmacêutica e os decisores políticos. Esta dissertação pretende aprofundar e elucidar a forma como as associações de doentes se relacionam com os restantes atores no domínio da saúde, intervindo com a gestão da terapêutica. Analisando o percurso destas associações particulares, é possível depreender o seu papel emergente na sociedade e as necessidades com que se deparam na atualidade.Patient organizations appear as social movements in the health domain. These collectives seek to defend the interests and the rights of patients, as well as providing assistance to them and to their families. These organizations have developed their activity in the health care field, serving as interlocutors and pressuring the other actors in this domain, such as: the scientific community, the health professionals, the pharmaceutical industry and the policy makers. This thesis aims to deepen and to clarify how patients' associations relate to other actors in the health care field, intervening in how therapy is managed.
