Foram definidos os seguintes objetivos: analisar se existem diferenças entre os grupos de pais e mães nas duas dimensões; analisar, em cada grupo, a relação entre estas dimensões, e ainda a relação de cada uma delas com a variável familiar, número de filhos. Os participantes foram 164 indivíduos, 80 pais e 84 mães. Foram utilizados o Questionário de Vinculação ao Pai e à Mãe, o Inventário de Envolvimento Paterno e um Questionário para recolha de informação sociodemográfica. Verificou-se que os dois grupos se diferenciaram na vinculação ao pai e à mãe (na relação com ambos os progenitores), apresentando os pais níveis mais elevados na Qualidade do Laço Emocional e as mães na Inibição da Exploração e Individualidade (neste caso o resultado para a relação com a mãe foi apenas marginalmente significativo). Os grupos diferenciaram-se ainda no envolvimento parental (Total), reportando as mães níveis mais elevados. Face à relação entre as duas dimensões, no grupo das mães as associações foram todas significativas (positivas para a Qualidade do Laço Emocional e Ansiedade de Separação, e negativas para a Inibição da Exploração e Individualidade), com exceção da que envolve a Ansiedade de Separação na relação com a mãe (não significativa) e a Qualidade do Laço Emocional também na relação com esta (marginalmente significativa). Esta última associação foi a única significativa no grupo dos pais. O número de filhos associou-se negativamente com o envolvimento parental nos dois grupos e com a Inibição da Exploração e Individualidade (na relação com ambos os progenitores) no grupo dos pais. Os resultados dão um contributo para um melhor entendimento da relação entre as duas dimensões visadas, insuficientemente estudada.The present study, with fathers and mothers of school-aged children (6-12 years), focuses on the adult’s perception of their own attachment to father and mother and on parental involvement. The following objectives were defined: to analyse whether there are differences between the groups of fathers and mothers in the two dimensions under study; to analyze, in each group, the relationship between these dimensions, and the relationship of each one with the family variable, number of children. A total of 164 parents, 80 fathers and 84 mothers, participated in the study. The Father/Mother Attachment Questionnaire and the Father Involvement Inventory were used, as well as a Questionnaire to collect sociodemographic information. The two groups were found to differ in the attachment to father/mother dimension (in the relationship with both parents), with fathers showing higher levels in the Quality of the Emotional Bond and mothers in the Inhibition of Exploration and Individuality (the result for the relationship with the mother was only marginally significant). The groups also differed in parental involvement (Total), with mothers reporting higher levels. Regarding the relationship between the two dimensions, in the mothers group the associations were all significant (positive for the Quality of the Emotional Bond and Separation Anxiety, and negative for the Inhibition of Exploration and Individuality), except for that involving Separation Anxiety in the relationship with the mother (not significant) and for Quality of the Emotional Bond, also in the relationship with the mother (marginally significant). The latter was the only significant association in the fathers group. The number of children was negatively associated with parental involvement in both groups and with Inhibition of Exploration and Individuality (for both parents) in the fathers group.
