A partir da cobertura jornalística sobre a região, buscou-se relacionar tais transformações com o fenómeno da gentrificação. Decidiu-se pelo uso de matérias de dois jornais impressos de grande circulação, a considerar que, além de reportar em seus textos as transformações ocorridas no local, os media também têm a capacidade de influenciar a opinião pública e stakeholders envolvidos na produção do espaço urbano. O objetivo geral da investigação foi caracterizar as manifestações da gentrificação em São Paulo por meio das representações da imprensa local. Em específico, buscou-se identificar como os media da cidade reportam o distrito de Santa Cecília e avaliar em que medida tais relatos apontam para a ocorrência de gentrificação naquela região. Concluiu-se que, ainda que as reportagens não permitam afirmar categoricamente a ocorrência de gentrificação em Santa Cecília, trazem fortes indícios de que processo(s) dessa natureza estão em curso na área, tais como o renascimento cultural e a (re)valorização simbólica e imobiliária do distrito.This dissertation analyses the transformations that took place in Santa Cecília, a downtown district in the Brazilian city of São Paulo, between 2006 and 2016. Based on news coverage about the area, connections were made between those changes and the phenomenon of gentrification. The research focused on news published on the two biggest regional newspapers, taking into account that media coverage not only reports changes that take place on site, but also influences both public opinion and the stakeholders directly involved in the production of the urban space. The general goal of the research was to characterize the manifestations of gentrification in São Paulo through its representation on the local media. More specifically, there was an effort to identify how the city's press reports Santa Cecília district and in what ways those reports point to the occurrence of gentrification in the region.
