Hoje o mar continua a ser uma fonte inesgotável, um meio de sustento e ainda um veículo de expressão contínuo. A arte tem sido uma forma, talvez a única, do ser humano se transcender a ele próprio na busca da plenitude existencial, no diálogo impossível com as forças da natureza e do cosmos, com os deuses, os seres e as coisas. Através da linguagem plástica, o homem desenvolveu uma forma particular de interpretar a realidade e a sua envolvente. A arte reflete o seu tempo, a sua história e o seu ambiente cultural. Ambiciono proporcionar, através desta dissertação, um maior conhecimento da obra do escultor português João Fragoso (Caldas da Rainha, 27 de abril de 1913 - Lisboa, 28 de dezembro de 2000), e da evolução do seu processo artístico, assim como possibilitar o aprofundamento e conhecimento do seu longo e vasto trabalho enquanto artista, explorando a influência predominante do mar na sua produção artística. Ao longo das últimas décadas, João Fragoso emergiu como um dos escultores mais distintos de Portugal, cujo trabalho está intimamente ligado à sua relação com o Oceano Atlântico. A pesquisa aqui desenvolvida analisará seu percurso artístico desde o século XX e sua repercussão na atualidade artística portuguesa, destacando como as influências do Mar moldaram a sua evolução criativa. Através de um estudo comparativo, relaciono algumas das suas obras artísticas com o meu trabalho pessoal, com o objetivo de amplificar as afinidades e diferenças entre nós, assim como percorrer a temática do Mar na Pintura, ao analisar a presença do Homem neste meio. Como sobrinho do escultor João Fragoso, a sua influência no meu trabalho artístico foi algo que sempre quis explorar. Como tema de estudo na presente dissertação, a Fase Mar é por mim a mais estimada de toda a sua obra. Contudo, no desenvolvimento da presente investigação, importa focar e analisar as três distintas fases que percorreu e exibiu, nomeadamente: figurativo, abstrato (mar) e minimal, respetivamente, fruto da sua poética de autor, refletindo acerca das diferentes linguagens, técnicas e materiais utilizados na sua relação com a temática em questão. Nesta dissertação, e numa fase final, irei ainda analisar o meu trabalho artístico enquanto espaço de reflexão e de investigação teórica no âmbito da proximidade de parentesco com João Fragoso. Aqui, levantarei algumas questões relativas ao ato de pintar, evidenciando também a atitude enquanto artista atual face ao meio envolvente, a perseverança que assumo, na cada vez mais complexa sociedade de consumo que coabitamos, diligenciando algumas das problemáticas que enfrentamos com o ambiente, nomeadamente os mares, através de instalações site specific com resíduos urbanos.I reflect on a subjective definition of the sea, which takes into account the way in which man has understood it over time: a space with a supernatural dimension, with human characteristics mixed with concepts that we associate with traditions or heroic deeds. Today the sea continues to be an inexhaustible source, a means of sustenance and a continuous vehicle of expression. Art has been a way, perhaps the only way, for human beings to transcend themselves in the search for existential fulfillment, in the impossible dialogue with the forces of nature and the cosmos, with gods, beings and things. Through plastic language, man developed a particular way of interpreting reality and his surroundings. Art reflects its time, its history and its cultural environment. I aim to provide, through this dissertation, a greater knowledge of the work of the Portuguese sculptor João Fragoso (Caldas da Rainha, April 27, 1913 - Lisbon, December 28, 2000), and the evolution of his artistic process, as well as to enable a deeper understanding of his long and vast work as an artist, exploring the predominant influence of the sea in his artistic production. Over the past few decades, João Fragoso has emerged as one of Portugal's most distinguished sculptors, whose work is intimately linked to his relationship with the Atlantic Ocean. The research developed here will analyze his artistic career since the 20th century and its impact on current Portuguese artistic life, highlighting how the influences of the Sea shaped his creative evolution. Through a comparative study, I relate some of his artistic works with my personal work, with the aim of amplifying the affinities and differences between us, as well as exploring the theme of the Sea in Painting, by analyzing the presence of Man in this environment. As the nephew of sculptor João Fragoso, his influence on my artistic work was something I always wanted to explore. As a subject of study in this dissertation, the Sea Phase is the most esteemed of all his work by me. However, in the development of this research, it is important to focus on and analyze the three distinct phases that he went through and exhibited, namely: figurative, abstract (sea) and minimal, respectively, as a result of his poetics as an author, reflecting on the different languages, techniques and materials used in his relationship with the theme in question. In this dissertation, and in its final phase, I will also analyze my artistic work as a space for reflection and theoretical investigation within the scope of my close kinship with João Fragoso.
