Its Physical presence varies in accordance with the objectives it proposes itself, though it might not always reach them. In order to understand these objectives, it is necessary to analyze the areas that define this encompassing and controversial concept. With special attention to sculpture, due to the continuity of an academic path pursued so far and, in a national context, due to the relevance it might have in its understanding, its first independent artistic expression in the public space – the monument – is analyzed and accompanied until the moment where a necessity for individual expression separates from itself and seeks its place. Public sculpture emerges and so does its expansion at the plastic and programmatic level, which inevitably raises the question of its purpose and effect in the public space.
