In this text, some issues are examined in relation to the current state of knowledge and recent trends in immigration and the labour market in Portugal. In the first section some of the principal theoretical contributions to this subject are referred to. Among these, the phenomenon of segmentation in labour markets and the importance of segmentation and labour flexibility are highlighted. In the second section, some statistical data on this theme in Portugal are reiterated. In the third section the principal studies that have been undertaken are reviewed.
