A literatura deixada por séculos de investigação e conhecimento são o preâmbulo da medicina moderna e um guia para a compreensão do ser humano nas suas vertentes física, psíquica, social e espiritual. O trabalho tem três grandes objectivos: acompanhar a evolução da literatura médica de relevo desde os primórdios da escrita; entender como a medicina pode ser romanceada e observada de um ponto de vista subjectivo, com ênfase na experiência humana da vida, doença e morte; e analisar a medicina de Torga com base na realidade médica portuguesa da época, investigando a dualidade médico-escritor. Cumprir estes três objectivos requereu revisão e análise de vários documentos históricos, provas da intelectualidade médica da época, e obras que se dedicaram ao entendimento do homem na sua relação com a Natureza. Ficou claro que a História da Literatura Médica foi influenciada por grandes obras e grandes mestres que souberam estudar o homem no quantum da nossa existência, desde as células, moléculas e átomos que nos constituem até ao mais transcendente de nós, a alma humana. Pude concluir que a medicina e a literatura são indissociáveis. A literatura é veículo do conhecimento médico, mas também uma forma nobre de expandir o nosso conhecimento da natureza humana.Understanding our society and medicine’s role on the contemporary world is only possible having in account its history. The literature left from centuries of investigation and knowledge is the preamble of modern medicine and a guide towards comprehension of human being on its physical, psychic, social and spiritual aspects. The theses has three major objectives: to accompany the evolution of relevant medical literature from the beginning of writing; to understand how medicine can be romanced and observed from a subjective point of view, with emphasis on the human experience of life, disease and death; and to analyze Torga’s medicine on the grounds of his time portuguese medical reality, investigating doctor-writer duality. Fulfilling this objectives required revision and analysis of various historical documents, proofs of its time medical intellectuality, and works dedicated to the understanding of Men in his relation with Nature. It remained clear that the History of Medical Literature was influenced by great works and great masters that knew how to study Men on the quantum of our existence, from the cells, molecules and atoms that we are made to the most transcendent of us, the human soul. I could conclude that medicine and literature are indissociable.
