However, Príncipe’s island, in particular the city of Santo António, has an "agitated" history with different cycles of growth and some periods of "inertia" throughout its expansion, which is today expressed by a city “lost in time" with several obstacles that prevent and delay the gradual development of the city and therefor the island. With this work we understand, draw conclusions and seek to apply them in an architectural project that can help in future growth of the city. Thus, in an initial phase is exposed a detailed analysis of Príncipe’s island, using information from its historical evolution to its urban, cultural and social component for a better understanding of the current socioeconomic panorama and the day to day life of the population. This information serves as a starting point for the projection of an equipment that can help the city with it’s growth, both economically, social and physical as well as a new social site for the inhabitants of the city. Outlined in an urban plan for the requalification of the city of Santo António, whose main objective is its total revitalization and a better connection between different areas of the city, the proposed equipment consists on a new Central Market allied to a Professional School. This new equipment affirms itself not only as a key factor in the elaboration of the urban plan but also in an urban and social level, as a referential building for the community.ABSTRACT: Príncipe’s island, alongside with São Tomé’s island constitute the São Tomé and Príncipe archipelago, a country with unique physical singularities that portray a unique culture in Africa.
