Vários artigos foram revistos para se poder obter uma perspectiva histórica e ter assim um contexto temporal para as variadas opções de tratamento estético ao longo dos anos. À medida que foram surgindo mais opções e melhores, ao nível dos materiais que mimetizam a estrutura dentária perdida, assim se foi reencontrando um equilíbrio. Esse equilíbrio que sempre se quis alcançar com a restauração da estética, da estrutura e da função, mas que por vezes ficava comprometido por tratamentos pouco conservadores, parece hoje alcançado graças à grande evolução registada principalmente ao nível das propriedades físico-químicas das cerâmicas e dos sistemas adesivos. Espera-se contribuir, com este trabalho, para a identificação correcta, das opções de tratamento a eleger, mediante cada caso com que o clínico se depare no seu dia-a-dia.The purpose for the preparation of this work was to present a review of the main concepts of esthetic restoration of anterior teeth, following the principles of biomimetics, that is, the respect for the nature and for the structures, its preservation and when necessary its replication. Several articles have been revised in order to get a historical perspective and thus have a temporal context for the various aesthetic treatment options over the years. As we were getting more and better options, in terms of materials that mimic the lost tooth structure, again a balance was reestablished. This balance which was always intended to be achieved with the restoration of aesthetics, structure and function, and sometimes was compromised by some other less conservative options, seems now achieved thanks to the great progress especially in terms of physical and chemical properties of ceramics and adhesive systems. It is expected that this work contributes to the correct identification of the treatment options to be chosen for each clinical case one comes to face in daily practice.
