Inventário, catalogação e estudo dos azulejos da Igreja de São Lourenço, matriz de Alhos Vedros

Abstract

A presente investigação diz respeito à inventariação, catalogação e estudo do revestimento azulejar da Igreja de São Lourenço, matriz de Alhos Vedros. A escolha deste tema de estudo foi motivada pela extensa história deste templo, a grande quantidade e amplitude cronológica do revestimento cerâmico que aí se encontra aplicado, bem como a necessidade de aprofundar o conhecimento sobre o mesmo. O trabalho encontra-se dividido em três capítulos fundamentais. O primeiro centra-se nos objetivos da investigação, apresentando ainda uma explicação detalhada sobre a metodologia utilizada para a realização dos processos de inventário e catalogação de revestimentos e padrões de azulejo. O capítulo seguinte diz respeito ao estado da arte, mas encontra-se dividido em duas partes. A primeira incide sobre a história este edifício, destacando os principais debates da historiografia, enquanto a segunda segue a mesma estrutura, mas incindindo agora especificamente sobre os revestimentos azulejares que foram o principal objeto de estudo deste trabalho. O terceiro capítulo corresponde à caracterização histórico artística da igreja. Organizado numa perspetiva cronológica, desde à sua fundação até aos dias de hoje, enquadra a azulejaria na história mais ampla do templo, incluindo as campanhas de obras e intervenções de restauro, destacando, pela sua relevância e novidade, o período da Lei da Separação do Estado das Igrejas e as suas consequências. Por fim, na síntese final salientam-se os principais resultados alcançados e as novas leituras que foi possível obter, abrindo ainda outras perspetivas de investigação futura. Assim, e para além do texto mais desenvolvido agora apresentado, importa chamar a atenção para a disponibilização, online e em livre acesso, das fichas de inventário e catalogação da Igreja de São Lourenço, matriz de Alhos Vedros (anexo A), no Az Infinitum –- Sistema de Referência e Indexação de Azulejo, que assim passa a integrar a mais completa base de dados sobre azulejo existente em Portugal, garantindo a este importante templo da margem sul do Tejo o lugar que merece na história da azulejaria portuguesa.

The present research concerns the inventory, cataloguing and study of the tile decorations of the Church of São Lourenço, the mother church of Alhos Vedros. This choice was motivated by the temple’s long history, the spatial and chronological breadth of its tile coverings and the need to increase the existing knowledge about these works. The study is divided into three main chapters. The first chapter presents its main aims and details the methodology used for the inventory and cataloguing of the church’s tile coverings and patterns. The second chapter presents the state of the art and is divided, in turn, into two parts. The first one deals with the building’s history and highlights the main historiographic debates, while the second one, following the same structure, focuses specifically on the tile decorations with which this work is primarily concerned. The third chapter offers a historical and artistic characterization of the Church of São Lourenço. Adopting a chronological perspective, starting with the church’s foundation and ending in the present day, the analysis examines the temple’s tile decorations in light of its wider history and pays special attention to the period of the so-called Law of the Separation of the State and the Church, due to its relevance, novelty and important consequences. Finally, the last section presents the study’s main results and the new readings proposed, paving the way to future studies on the subject. Apart from the text hereby presented, it is worth highlighting the inventory and catalogue entries concerning the Church of São Lourenço (appendix A), that were made available on Az Infinitum – Azulejo Referencing and Indexation System. By being included in Portugal’s most comprehensive database on tile decorations, this important church on the southern bank of the river Tagus has finally been granted its proper place in the history of Portuguese azulejos.
