Território e poder entre duas vilas da Estremadura : Aldeia Galega e Alenquer na Idade Média

Abstract

A dissertação que aqui se apresenta pretende estudar as relações entre duas vilas da atual região Oeste: Aldeia Galega e Alenquer. Procurará igualmente fazer delas um caso de estudo para compreender alguns aspetos do Portugal medieval. Partindo do plano físico da vila menos estudada – Aldeia Galega da Merceana - analisaremos o seu desenvolvimento no espaço e as suas instituições, mediante o que as fontes permitem. Depois, como cabeça de um concelho, estudaremos o seu termo. No decurso dessa segunda parte deste trabalho, somos confrontados com uma realidade complexa, que exige a observação mais detalhada de um fenómeno até agora pouco explorado. Nascido o concelho de um antigo julgado, integrado no termo de Alenquer, a vila de Aldeia Galega acabou por ter de partilhar o seu termo com o dessa vila. Procuraremos definir os contornos da jurisdição desse primeiro julgado e o desenvolvimento institucional do concelho a que deu lugar, o que explicará por si a complexidade do termo da vila de Aldeia Galega. No encalço dessa explicação, desenvolveremos um pequeno estudo mais abrangente sobre o que significa ser um julgado naquela região na Idade Média, explorando os concelhos limítrofes ao nosso. Por fim, estabelecido o espaço sobre o qual trabalhamos e o seu desenvolvimento, realizamos um estudo sobre as relações entre essa região e o seu senhor. Desse ponto de vista, a vila de Aldeia Galega é praticamente inseparável de Alenquer e, por essa razão, alargamos o estudo a essa vila definitivamente: frequentemente doadas a infantas e a rainhas, as duas vilas acabarão por ser integradas no bloco territorial a que, no século XV, se chamará “Terras das Rainhas”. Exploraremos então que relações estabeleceram com o território e as suas instituições, como o geriram e em que circunstâncias os conflitos em que se envolveram a eles se estenderam.

The study of the relationship between two small towns in medieval Portugal (Aldeia Galega and Alenquer) is the aim of this dissertation. They will also be taken as a case study to understand a few aspects of medieval Portugal. Using as a starting point the physical space of the least studied town – Aldeia Galega da Merceana, we will then analyse its development in space and its institutions, to the extent that the sources allow. Because the town became the head of a municipality, its hinterland will also be studied. It will reveal a complex reality, demanding a careful observation of a phenomenon until now very little explored. Born from an ancient “julgado” (the area of jurisdiction of a judge), part of Alenquer’s hinterland, the town of Aldeia Galega will share its hinterland with that of Alenquer. We will try to define the limits of the jurisdiction of that first “julgado” and the institutional development of the municipality which took its place. That will explain why is Aldeia Galega’s hinterland so complex. Pursuing that explanation, we will develop a wider study about what means to be a medieval “julgado” in that region, exploring the municipalities around. Finally, established the space and its development, we will try to understand the relationship of that land with its lord. In what concerns this matter, the town of Aldeia Galega has an unbreakable bound with Alenquer. As such, we will study the two towns together: frequently given to queens and princesses, the two towns will become, in the 15th century, part of the “Queen’s Dominion”. We will explore the relationship established between these ladies and their territory and its institutions, how they managed it and in what circumstances the conflicts in which they were involved affected these towns.
