Abstract(s)
After the world pandemic, caused by SARS-COV-II virus, started one of the aspects of the morden society, which has been developing since early years of social media and computer world, is the exponential increase of anxiety and its respective progression into depression caused higher levels of constante agitation and stress as well as unrealistic life expectations which lead to unattainable outcomes. For this reason, more and more people have been seeking professional help or choosing, based on their prerogative, to find solutions for how they feel, namely in the use of supplements. Since supplements are considered food, they are regulated by the DGAV (initials that stand for Veterinary and Food General Direction) and require this organisation's stamp of approval before they are sold to the public but without the need to check for quality, efficiency, or safety just as it happens, for example, with medication. They can be sold over the counter and don't require a prescription, medical assistance, or advice from a trainned professional. Also, a supplement may have certain contraindications as well as certain reactions to other medications or food groups. Anxiety and depression have previously been prevalent mental health conditions but have worsened considerably during the SARS-COV-II virus pandemic period. Although medication is still considered the main mode of intervention, many individuals in search of new solutions have opted for supplements as an answer for their therapeutic needs to improve symptoms and promote health, Food supplements, as relevant food to complement certain micronutrients such as, iron, magnisium, calcium, zink, selenium and iodine, certain vitamins such as A, complex B, C, D, E, food sources containning omega-3, probiotics, amino acids, and herbal extracts, have a beneficial outcome in the realm of psychological conditions. Therefore, evidence shows that a healthy gut microbiome is important, having a direct connection between physical and mental health. This study aims to provide an understanding , through a literature review, to the state of anxiety and depression in a post SARS-COV-II pandemic society and how the role of food supplements can play a viable solution. The importance of a balanced diet was identified for the general clinical state of the patient and in how it can contribute to the improvement of the studied pathologies. A questionnaire was alsocomposed and distributed by internal email during the month of July 2022 across the various ampuses of the University of Lisbon, having colleted the results at the end of the same month. Afer its completion the answers were coded to assure confidentiality. The questionnaire was divided into sections with 83 replies. After analyzing the results, it was concluded that mos of the participants were accostumedto social interaction and that the lack of it can lead to an increase of stress and consequently anxiety or depression, with bigger or smaller consequences due to confinement especially in people living alone or with few household members. for this reason, anxiety connected to COVI-19 has increased. This study evaluated that University of Lisbon students' sample, represented by the questionnaire, believe that supplements can be beneficial, and consume them as well.
