Abstract(s)
This monograph briefly presents the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and the disease it causes (COVID-19). In this context, this monograph shows a brief presentation of the virus's characteristics and the disease's pathophysiology and epidemiology. According to the potential therapies to be applied in the treatment of COVID-19, the main focus is pulmonary surfactant therapy. Thus, the surfactants are discussed, namely their chemical classification. The main characteristics and therapeutic applications of pulmonary surfactants are also described. It also presents the benefits and risks of pulmonary surfactants among the various therapeutic approaches. These do not have a prophylactic effect, nor do they eliminate the virus, but demonstrate therapeutic efficacy associated with an improvement in the respiratory capacity of patients and consequently reduce the need for ventilator-assisted breathing, as well as being associated with a decrease in the mortality rate.
