Resumo: Remixed digital media content, known as internet memes, is the central research object of this PhD thesis. More specifically, what I observed is the potential of using such content as a language capable of promoting visual and media empowerment (political and cultural) for various actors in social media, which I assume as pertinent in the context of visual culture art education. The aim of this project has been to build a new curricular proposal across the school subjects of art and media education in secondary education. For this endeavour, I considered it extremely necessary to discover and classify a set of relevant and urgent skills for the development of visual empowerments in our educational context. From the development of a critical paradigm based on the methodological approaches of action research and ethnography for the internet, a theoretical and practical work plan was built, starting with textual and visual research, proceeded and articulated with field work. These studies have been guided by an essentially qualitative and critical methodological model, from which a series of practical classroom experiments have been performed, in order to answer the project’s main and underlying research questions. Based on the dialogues and results obtained in the field work, the curriculum proposal called “Visual Culture Education in Social Media [EVMS]” has been designed.
