It consists of the study of the chronology of insertion of women in this profession, since the beginning of the 20th Century, through the institutionalization of the design world-wide, in the Bauhaus, and specific aspects of the institutionalization of the profession in Brazil and Portugal, as well as a critical analysis of the current situation of the field: what has already been achieved, the characteristics of the current market and the challenges for the future. Its objective is to understand the role of women in the development of the profession and its current situation in graphic design in Brazil and Portugal so that, in the end, it is possible to propose strategies that allow the evolution of the profession in a more egalitarian way. In order for these objectives to be successfully achieved, the research was divided into two main parts: the literature review – in pursuance of historically understand the role of women in this area and to gather data on the current market situation – and the surveys and interviews, which had great importance in the validation of the investigation, in the search for more specific information of each environment and in a deeper understanding of the information already collected in the first phase. In the survey stage, agroup of Brazilian and Portuguese designers were consulted, with different agegroups and work forms – partners of their own companies, employees of largecompanies, autonomous professionals, etc. – who answered questions about their academic and professional background and their perceptions about gender issues in this environment. It is hoped that this research will contribute to a greater recognition and visibility of women in this environment and a deeper understanding of the setting in which they are inserted, so that, every day, graphic design is a gender equality environmentpt_PT
