Forte de São João Baptista da Berlenga : um plano de gestão integrada

Abstract

milhas do Cabo Carvoeiro, área pertencente ao município de Peniche. Construído no século XVII, na senda do período da Restauração, terá servido o prepósito de assegurar o domínio da ilha da Berlenga, assim como de cruzar fogo com os restantes fortes militares, conjunto de fortificações que se denomina como linha defensiva de Peniche. O forte é considerado Monumento Nacional desde 1938. Na década de cinquenta do século XX é reabilitado pela Direção Geral dos Edifícios e Monumentos Nacionais. Após um longo período de abandono, altera-se a sua estrutura militar para Pousada de luxo. Com a revolução, a 25 de abril de 1974, a Pousada é pilhada, sendo mais tarde ocupada pela população local. Atualmente encontra-se sobre a orientação da Associação Amigos da Berlenga. Esta Associação tem vindo a preservar o edifício há mais de 40 anos como Casa-abrigo, no entanto, com grande dificuldade, por falta de recursos que permitam uma conservação mais eficaz. Cada vez mais visitado por turistas que procuram experienciar culturalmente o local, não existe qualquer estrutura expositiva atribuída ao edifício histórico que possibilite uma maior compreensão deste monumento e da sua envolvente. Apesar de existirem boas condições na orientação dos visitantes para as questões naturais da ilha, os aspetos históricos são subvalorizados, não havendo uma maior verba para essa contextualização. Propõe-se com este estudo, o conhecimento sobre o Forte de São João Baptista, a sua contextualização enquanto Edifício Militar, Pousada Histórica e Casa-abrigo, lembrando a relação de simbiose natural que partilha com a ilha e com a história da região de Peniche. Tendo em vista o apoio à Associação que preserva a fortaleza, permitem-se algumas sugestões para a captação de verbas, tentando motivar a direção a assumir uma postura com maior disponibilidade à iniciativa cultural, atraindo uma maior atenção ao potencial dos aspetos históricos do monumento.

The São João Baptista Fort is located on the Berlengas archipelago about 6 miles from Cape Carvoeiro, an area belonging to the municipality of Peniche. Built in the 17th century, in the restoration period, it served to secure the domination of the island of Berlenga, as well as to cross fire with the remaining military forts, a group of fortifications that is known as the Peniche defensive line. The fort is considered a National Monument since 1938. In the nineteen-fifties, after a long period of abandon, it is rehabilitated by the Direção Geral dos Edificios e Monumentos Nacionais (General Directorate of National Buildings and Monuments), its military structure changes to a luxury inn. With the revolution, on the 25 of April of 1974, the inn is plundered, and later occupied by the local population. A local association is currently in charge of the fort, the Associação Amigos da Berlenga (Association Friends of Berlenga). This association has been preserving the building for more than 40 years as home shelter, however, with great difficulty, because of a lack of resources that would allow a more effective conservation. Increasingly visited by tourists seeking to experience the place culturally, there is no information structure attributed to the historic building, which would allow a greater understanding of this monument. Although there are good conditions because of the orientation of the visitors towards the environmental matters of the island, the historical aspects are undervalued, and there is no larger budget for this contextualization. This study intends to provide an understanding of the fort São João Baptista, its contextualization as a military building, historical inn and shelter house, remembering the natural symbiosis that it shares with the island and the history of the Peniche region. In order to support the association which preserves the fortress, some suggestions are allowed regarding the raising of funds, trying to motivate the direction to assume a posture with greater openness towards cultural initiatives and attracting a greater attention to the potential of the historical aspects of the monument.
