título A arte pública e a construção do lugar.
As we travel in the city by car or by public transportation, our attention is filled with a blur of rhythmic and shining colours. If we opt for a walk, we realise that the city is covered with azulejos that are diluted in the landscape dynamics. In fact, in last decades of 20th century, art has been working with the public space towards urban revitalization and social commitment, being the azulejo a privileged means of action. The present dissertation entitled A arte pública e a construção do lugar. A presença do azulejo (1970-2013), has as its main goal the study of contemporary azulejo used as public art and as a constructor of places, from the 1970s until nowadays. Divided into two main parts, the first of which focusing on discussing the key concepts that serve as a basis for the research, taking into account the subject of study, the azulejo. Therefore, what is proposed is a critical analysis of the existing theories about public art and a clarification of the challenges imposed to it by the “new public spaces”. These are place of traffic, arising from recent urban mobility, and transforming the city landscape. Regarding that, we propose to explain the concept of constructor of place, through, space and place definitions in order to demonstrate how the azulejo can have a function as a constructor of place, in the national context. In the second part, which results from the analysis and interpretation of the concepts from the first part, there will be reading of the azulejo’s role in urban revitalization, manifested especially with its application in the “new public spaces” through the new approach to ceramic artwork by particular artists, concerning Lisbon’s city space starting in the 1970s.
