As origens das figurações medievais do diabo

Abstract

O objectivo desta dissertação consiste numa reflexão sobre as figurações medievais do Diabo. Analisamos assim a evolução da figura antropomórfica do Mal, ao longo da Idade Média, na cultura ocidental cristã. O estudo aprofundado das figurações e representações do Mal permite a compreensão dos fenómenos religiosos e sociais que dão origem à figura do Diabo enquanto modelo de justificação do Mal que afecta a humanidade. Nesse sentido, pretendemos analisar a representação do Diabo no antigo manuscrito medieval denominado Código de Gigas ou “Bíblia do Diabo”, passando pelo estudo da figura de Satanás no Antigo e no Novo Testamento. Por fim, iremos ainda aludir às principais divindades pagãs da Antiguidade, bem como aos discursos do clero e ao legado da cultura popular que ajudaram a construir o imaginário do Diabo.

Abstract: The goal of this dissertation is the study of the medieval figures and images that are related to the Christian concept of the Devil. In this sense, we intend to analyse the evolution of the anthropomorphic figure of the Devil in the Middle Ages. By studying the representations of evil in Western Christian culture we can understand that the Devil appeared in a social and religious milieu in order to justify the existence of evil in the world. Therefore, we intend to analyse the largest illustration of the Devil in the ancient medieval manuscript called the Codex Gigas or “The Devil’s Bible”. We will also reflect upon Satan’s evolution in the Old and New Testament. Finally, we will refer to the main pagan deities from Antiquity that are fundamental source of the figure of the Devil and we will allude to the representations of Satan in Middle Ages both in religious and folklore culture.
