Orlando Ribeiro (1911-1997) é o geógrafo português mais conhecido internacionalmente. A sua importância para a Geografia em Portugal deve-se ao facto de ser amplamente considerado o principal renovador da disciplina no nosso país. O seu período de formação escolar estende-se até 1940.
O ambiente familiar levou-o a inclinar-se para a História e a Geografia. Circunstâncias escolares e a frequência de instituições de ensino superior em Lisboa levaram-no à carreira docente e a realizar o Doutoramento. As relações sociais, frequentando círculos académicos da Medicina, explicam a forma como encara a Universidade e a investigação científica que deverão estar relacionadas. O capital espacial dos espaços que frequenta é fundamental para compreender a sua trajetória. A raiz do francesismo, nacionalismo, culturalismo e historicismo que enforma a sua obra geográfica encontra-se nesta primeira fase.
Orlando Ribeiro foi professor no Colégio Infante de Sagres, muito marcado pela pedagogia ativa. Este ambiente deu-lhe a prática para trabalhar no campo e para se tornar docente reputado e renovador a nível dos métodos de ensino.
As atividades do geógrafo nos períodos de férias testemunham a tentativa de integração nas redes científicas. Servem-lhe para treinar apresentações, discutir temas científicos com os pares, apropriar-se da teoria luso-tropicalista, patente nas suas análises posteriores sobre a colonização, e a acumular o capital social que o levará a tornar-se professor na Universidade de Coimbra.
Entre 1937 e 1940, Orlando Ribeiro exerce o cargo de Leitor na Universidade de Paris. O capital social constituído com o casamento e o capital espacial da cidade de Paris influenciaram o seu percurso. Tece relações científicas no seio do Institut de Géographie, que lhe serão úteis e aos seus discípulos.
Os trabalhos que o geógrafo publica até à partida para França traduzem a sua reflexão teórica sobre as caraterísticas da Geografia e sua aplicação. O Doutoramento, escorado em trabalho de campo, é uma investigação original sobre a serra da Arrábida, testemunhando a vontade de renovação da Universidade e uma Geografia ideográfica. Finalmente, os textos produzidos nos anos de Paris testemunham como Ribeiro é marcado por esta Escola geográfica. Traduzem uma Geografia útil à modernização de Portugal.

His importance for Geography in Portugal stems from being widely considered the main renovator of the discipline in Portugal. Family nurturing account for his inclination towards History and Geography. His period of school training extends until 1940. School circumstances and attendance at higher education institutions in Lisbon channeled him to a teaching career and to pursue a PhD degree. Social relationships, including frequenting medical academic circles, explain his views on the connection between University and scientific research. The spatial capital of the spaces he inhabited is fundamental to understand his scientific trajectory. The roots of the French approach, nationalism, culturalism and historicism that shape his geographical work stem from this first phase. Orlando Ribeiro was a school teacher at Colégio Infante de Sagres very marked by active pedagogy.
