| dc.description.abstract | Historical research on the War at Sea is crucial for understanding its impact on global politics, economy, and scientific and technological progress. Naval wars have shaped borders, trade routes, and economic power, with nations achieving dominance through naval superiority. This drive for superiority spurred innovations in shipbuilding, weaponry, and technologic systems, which also influenced civil industries and global maritime activities. This book aligns with the strategic research plan of the Centre for History of the University of Lisbon, Societies in Tense Connections, focusing on the dimensions of tension and conflict in human societies, as well with the goals of the Military History RG, which aims to explore the theoretical and practical aspects of war, covering a wide range of topics from Antiquity to the Contemporary Age. Focusing on naval warfare and technology, this work opens with a contribution by Larrie Ferreiro, Pulitzer Prize Finalist in History (2017), on the concept of “Force Multipliers” applied to War at Sea. Organized into chronological sections, from Antiquity to the Cold War, the following chapters, by international specialists, offer a multidisciplinary analysis of naval warfare. Among the diverse perspectivest the book includes innovative studies on topics such as Navies, Naval Strategy, Naval Operations, Maritime Defense, Naval Blockade, Ports, Shipbuilding, Maritime Navigation, Aeronaval forces, Artillery, and Amphibious Warfare Forces. | |
