Resumo(s)

This study intended to characterize and prevent the occurrence of pesticides found in waters potentially used for human consumption in Continental Portugal, particularly occurrences above the value 0.1 μg/L - maximum value permitted by law, in faucet, for individual pesticides and 0.5 μg/L for the total of pesticides. To characterize the available information, data from the networks of ground and surface water of the National System of Information on Hydric Resources (SNIRH) were selected. Subsequently, the pesticides with concentrations above the value 0.1 μg/L were identified. From the existing stations in SNIRH, 258 are a part of the surface water quality network and 1056 to the ground water. Special attention was given to 28 (10.8%) stations of the surface water quality network and 24 (2.3%) stations of the ground water quality network since they presented concentration above the value 0.1 μg/L. To this end, the registered pesticides and their concentrations, as well as the hydrographic region and the district where they were detected, were recorded.Various limitations in data availability and the methodology currently applied to determine the pesticides to be monitored in freshwater bodies were detected. Therefore, the elaboration of a methodology was proposed for the selection of the pesticides to search for the waters intended for human consumption. Important aspects to be considered in this methodology were illustrated via a case study in a Portuguese agricultural area (Golegã) that is representative for the existing cultures in Portugal. After the characterization of the main crops and pesticides authorized for use in these, the expected environmental distribution and the potential leaching of these pesticides in the maize and tomato cultures were evaluated. This case study further emphasized the need to base the selection of pesticides to be monitored in waters intended for human consumption on the existing cultures in the area of concern, the soil characteristics, the amount of pesticides used and their toxicity and physical-chemical properties, as well as the contamination and leaching potential of the water compartment
