Resumo(s)
Buildings and their energy-consuming equipment constitute a significant proportion of energy consumption within the European Union. In response to the need for reduced costs and
environmental impact, consumers opt for high-efficiency class home appliances to satisfy energy
demands. However, energy assessment and performance indicators in the European Union energy
labeling regulation do not reflect the real-life utilization of appliances.
To address this issue, the H2020 European project SATO aims to develop appliance energy
assessments capable of expressing real-life utilization and life-cycle evolution. To offer users an
intuitive platform for accessing comprehensive appliance information, this thesis involves designing, implementing, and evaluating a mobile application for Android and iOS in collaboration with
Worten. This application is intended to inform users about their appliances’ real-life energy performance, regulatory energy labels, and cost estimates and facilitate fault and anomaly detection.
The mobile user interface was created using the cross-platform mobile framework Flutter,
with Flask as the intermediary for all interactions with the SATO platform. The development
process followed a structured and iterative approach, starting with the initial requirements analysis, progressing through system and prototype design and implementation, and concluding with
a thorough mobile application usability evaluation. As part of the evaluation process, users were
asked to complete a questionnaire that included specific tasks within the application. Likert-scale
and open-ended questions were also used to identify potential usability concerns or functionality
issues.
In general, the results indicate that participants found the tasks easy to complete and were
generally satisfied with the time taken. They found the mobile application highly intuitive and
were pleased with the diverse features available. Nonetheless, the evaluation uncovered some
minor challenges that present valuable opportunities for improvement.
