Resumo(s)
Currently the reduction of the amount and the wastewater treatment issues are very relevant in the
area of Environmental Engineering. The need to explore the optimization of primary treatment, one of
the integrated line treatment of liquid fraction of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), and increased
production of biogas from sludge generated (solid fraction) unit processes was the motivation for the
preparation of this dissertation.
In the present study were collected and characterized representative samples of flow of input and
output in the primary settling tank of the Beirolas WWTP. Coagulation-flocculation assays and crushed
seed of Moringa oleifera in Jar test were conducted in order to understand the coagulant properties of
this plant. M. oleifera is a plant native to northwestern India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The removal efficiencies achieved for turbidity, COD, BOD5 e TSS are 86, 73, 66 e 79%, respectively.
The reference scenario and an exploratory optimization, given some presuppositions and theoretical
values were sketched. The obtained results indicate a decrease of 20% of affluent organic load to the
secondary treatment, reducing energy costs for aeration, and an increased potential for energy
production, about 5%. The synergistic effect of these two factors can increase energy efficiency in
WWTP
