passivo, observador agressivo e observador pró-social.
The advance of digital technologies has brought a new version of bullying, generating a growing problem of digital violence called cyberbullying. This phenomenon impacts adolescents' social interactions, bringing up unpleasant emotions that damage their mental health. Several research studies have explored this phenomenon related to emotional experiences, suggesting that emotions influence adolescents' behavior. Accordingly, a qualitative study was conducted with the aim of identifying and understanding adolescents' emotional reactions to cyberbullying situations. This study also proposed to investigate possible difficulties and strategies that adolescents encountered when regulating their emotions as observers of cyberbullying situations. A total of 29 semistructured interviews were conducted with middle school students from two regular schools in the Lisbon region and from São Miguel Island, Azores. A content analysis of the qualitative data was performed. The results obtained indicated that the unpleasant emotions that emerged when observing cyberbullying situations can determine the emotional states of adolescents showing empathic reactions towards those involved in cyberbullying contexts, when these favor problem solving and victim defense. Most adolescents demonstrated more emotional regulation skills than difficulties, showing that the use of emotional regulation strategies increases the sense of social responsibility and the ability to articulate pro-social solutions, benefiting psychological well-being and increasing positive bonds among adolescents.
