Seguindo a imprensa para avaliar a recepção da cultura de protesto em Portugal, o presente estudo centra-se na ideia de que os fenómenos contraculturais que decorreram no nosso paĆs em finais da dĆ©cada de 60 foram manifestaƧƵes que, tendo tido origem no estrangeiro, chegaram a Portugal com uma forƧa que nem um regime que se opunha a valores democrĆ”ticos podia travar. Para alĆ©m disso, pretende-se estabelecer pontos de contacto entre os movimentos congĆ©neres nos EUA, em FranƧa, no Reino Unido e em Portugal, paĆs que vivia os anos finais de uma ditadura. Dado que este estudo se baseia na imprensa nacional, importa, nĆ£o apenas clarificar conceitos como os de Ā«culturaĀ», Ā«contraculturaĀ» e Ā«cultura de protestoĀ», mas tambĆ©m tentar interpretar o papel que teve a imprensa periódica na disseminação da cultura (de protesto) no Portugal dessa Ć©poca. Neste sentido, nĆ£o se pode deixar de dar relevĆ¢ncia Ć s novas (ou velhas) polĆticas que Marcelo Caetano adoptou para o paĆs e para a imprensa. Se a censura continuou a existir após o afastamento polĆtico de Salazar, Ć© necessĆ”rio explicar de que forma jornalistas, escritores e intelectuais de diferentes Ć”reas foram conseguindo protestar num paĆs que, embora estivesse a passar por um processo de acentuado crescimento económico (como acontecia com muitos dos paĆses democrĆ”ticos ocidentais), nĆ£o garantia as liberdades individuais de expressĆ£o.
Focusing on the Portuguese press to understand the reception of foreign counterculture in Portugal, this study argues that the countercultural movement of the late 60s in our country, although it had its origins abroad, hit Portugal with such strength that not even (or specially) a regime opposed to democratic values could face. Furthermore, it attempts to understand the similarities between counterculture movements in democratic countries like the U.S., France, the UK, with the Portuguese, unique in the sense that it grew in the final days of a dictatorship. Since this study is based on the national press, it's not only important to clarify concepts such as 'counterculture' and 'culture of protest', but also to try to interpret the role that the press had in the regular dissemination of (protest) culture in Portugal of the time. In this sense, one cannot stress enough the importance of new (or old) policies that Marcelo Caetano adopted for the country and the press. If censorship continued to exist after the political removal of Salazar, one must explain how journalists, writers and intellectuals from different fields were able to protest in a country that, although going through a process of accentuated economic growth (much like the democratic countries of the West), failed to recognize individual freedom of expression rights.
