Resumo(s)

This thesis aims to stabilize the concepts “Dance” and “Performance” by checking the porosity and contamination of the areas they circumscribe; to identify historical moments, authors and relevant key works for their distinction; and discuss artistic practices in Portugal associated with them since the seventies of the twentieth century. The thesis comes from the assumption that the continued confrontation with the content involved in the convergence and divergence of these areas generates specific knowledge that translate into tools, attitudes, modes of perception and particular outcomes. It discusses the notions of live, moving body, hybridity and ephemerality, physicality and event, as well as notation and recording, in order to build a perspective that distinguishes Dance and Performance, on the basis of the distinction between generating context and putting into context, between affirming and relating to. It identifies in a structured and methodologically validated way, what skills, interests and specific objectives are present in the practice of artists whose work has a clear focus on the performer's body, framed by elements, practices and strategies traditionally connoted with the areas of Visual and Performing Arts. It proceeds to survey the work of the first Portuguese performers linked to Visual Arts, from a structure on two axes – Egídio Álvaro and Ernesto de Sousa – deriving from the lack works. This survey, including the largest possible number of objective descriptions, was made simultaneously with a collection of data arising from the bibliography, compiled in an extensive chronology, organized into two fields: national and international. Achieving this latest study object was further supported in a series of interviews with artists and other protagonists of the history of Portuguese Art. The thesis ends with the analysis of two cases of artists associated with the field of Dance that gradually made the transition to the territory of Performance – Vera Mantero and João Fiadeiro – by selecting a work of each author in order to synthetically systematize previously addressed aspects
