Foi no âmbito da investigação desenvolvida com vista à elaboração da nossa tese de Doutoramento que tivemos oportunidade de
localizar um manuscrito que desde logo se revelou do maior interesse
– ainda que não trouxesse contributos directos para a nossa dissertação, cujo tema era a importação de escultura barroca italiana para
Portugal no século XVII. Tratava-se da Relação da Caza que Tinha em
Roma o Embaxador Arcebispo de Braga D. Luís de Souza 1
, que consistia numa descrição da residência romana de D. Luís de Sousa (1637-
1690), bispo de Lamego, arcebispo de Braga e embaixador de Portugal
em Roma entre 1675 e 1682.
Mais recentemente, durante a preparação para edição do diário
manuscrito dessa mesma embaixada2
, voltou a nossa atenção a ser solicitada por esse texto que descreve o palácio habitado em Roma por D.
Luís de Sousa. Assim, é de certa forma a exploração do conteúdo dessa
descrição que nos propomos realizar com o presente texto, efectuando não só uma aproximação ao edifício em si mas também à vivência
experienciada por D. Luís de Sousa nos seus interiores, ao longo dos
quase seis anos da sua estada romana.
It was during the investigation of our PhD Dissertation’s theme that we were able to find a manuscript of great interest, although it did not bring a direct contribution to our work then, which theme was the importation of Italian sculpture in the context of the artistic and cultural connections between Portugal and Italy in the seventeenth century. The manuscript entitled Relação da Caza que Tinha em Roma o Embaxador Arcebispo de Braga D. Luís de Souza, consisted on a description of the roman residence of D. Luís de Sousa (1637-1690), bishop of Lamego, archbishop of Braga and ambassador of Portugal in Rome between 1675 and 1682. Recently, during the preparation of the edition of the manuscript journal of that same embassy, our attention was once again called by this text that reveals the roman palace of D. Luís de Sousa. In a certain way it is the explanation of the contents of that description the aim of the present text, looking forward to know better not only the building but also the living experience of the Portuguese ambassador in the Seicento Rome.
