dc.description.abstractCardiovascular disease represents the leading cause of death worldwide. Different imaging methods are available to aide in both the diagnosis of coronary artery disease and monitoring of the disease processes, including ultrasound/echocardiography, nuclear imaging, hybrid imaging, molecular imaging, and invasive imaging. Over the last few years, developments have been made not only from a technical, but also from a medical viewpoint, and these developments have been significant for the management of coronary artery disease. This review will briefly discuss the main cardiac imaging techniques for the assessment of coronary artery disease by focusing on three main areas: (i) coronary artery anatomy, lumen size, and atherosclerotic plaques; (ii) myocardial perfusion; and (iii) myocardial viability. The advancements in imaging technology have expanded the use of imaging for coronary artery disease, and it is now considered an important tool for the prevention and diagnosis of coronary artery disease and the monitoring of the different therapeutic strategies. Cardiovascular imaging has been included in the current international guidelines, demonstrating its appropriateness for the management of patients with suspected or known coronary artery disease.pt_PT
