Views and contributions to just transitions of waste circular initiatives in Colombia

Discussions on global Sustainability transitions proposals such as the Circular transition are primarily led by Global North ‘experts,' thus reproducing solutions that emerge mostly from western epistemological standpoints that can perpetuate cognitive injustices, by invisibilizing Global South perspectives. These cognitive injustices are historically intertwined with socioecological injustices as those whose knowledge has been the most marginalized bear disproportionate socio-ecological burdens. As illustrated by Waste, valuable Southern contributions have been devalued. Waste offers a great illustrative symbolism of Modernity’s rooted ideas of externalization and wastage that continue to fuel the eco- social crisis. As these Global South Perspectives, waste is an untapped goldmine. Thus, mirroring the waste revalue proposition in the Circular economy (CE), there is a need to revalue overlooked CE businesss perspectives from the South. Accordingly, with a decolonial lense rooted in intercultural dialogue, this study focuses on how Global South circular business actors in Colombia are materializing these transitions, by examining their conceptual and practical contributions to the Circular economy and a Just sustainability transition. Four small waste circular companies in Colombia were interviewed and ethnographically observed. The study developed a Justice framework to analyze their justice contributions. Findings challenged CE definitions, as CE was envisioned as a social Justice vehicle. The results emphasized the need for social inclusion of marginalized groups and warned against transposing policy and business CE strategies that ignored the local context. Likewise, initiatives contributed to a just transitions in different ways, mostly in the compensatory and restorative dimensions of Justice. In the spirit of knowledge co-production, results and recommendations were shared with the case studies. The study provides valuable experience-backed information for Just transitions. The study also holds practical contributions for CE practitioners, promotes acceptance for other circularities, and embodies contributions to the field of Just transitions.
