Com poucas exceções, as associações científicas são um objeto negligenciado pelos estudos da ciência. No entanto, elas estão em rápida expansão em Portugal, acompanhando o recente desenvolvimento do sistema científico nacional. Neste sentido, este artigo apresenta uma proposta de tipologia das associações científicas que nos permita compreender a heterogeneidade encontrada no terreno. A partir de um recenseamento de associações científicas portuguesas, iniciado em 2011, foi aplicado um inquérito por questionário e efetuados estudos aprofundados de uma amostra de associações, que nos permitem distinguir os três ideais-tipo propostos com base nas características dos sócios e nas principais atividades das associações.
Scientific associations are a neglected object in the social studies of science. However, they experience a substantial growth in Portugal, as a result of the recent development of the national scientific system. This article presents a proposal for a typology of scientific associations that will allow us to understand the heterogeneity of this field. Departing from a census of Portuguese scientific associations, initiated in 2011 and complemented with a survey and in-depth studies of a sample of associations, three ideal-types emerge, based on the characteristics of members and their main activities.
