Estranhos numa terra (quase) estranha: os contactos pré-coloniais no sul do território actualmente português

| dc.description.abstract | Between the twelfth and eight centuries BC, Mediterranean artefacts are rare in the South of Portugal. Such a situation, so different from what we can observe in the central area of the country (Beiras), could, at least in part, be justified by a lack of study of the Final Bronze Age in the south of the country. However, the data has been listed and discussed. The presence of Mediterranean artefacts in South of Portugal, before the arrival of Phoenician colonisers in the Atlantic façade of the Iberian Peninsula is, now, unquestionable. The data shows that in the last few decades of the second millenium and in the first few of the first, local populations in the Portuguese southern area were using artefacts originating from the Mediterranean and were acquainted with Mediterranean adornment and clothing. Such links can be demonstrated only sporadically in an initial phase (tenth century), at least in the interior, and are still rare in later phases (ninth century). This rare presence may be related to the reduced interest of the eastern navigators in the Alentejo and Algarve resources. But, we must also consider that the indigenous groups may have had little interest in becoming involved in the final Bronze Age networks of Atlantic-Mediterranean exchanges. This analysis, and the geography of the Mediterranean «pre-colonial» in Alentejo and Algarve, also suggests that there is no continuity between these Bronze Age Mediterranean artifacts and the arrival of Phoenician settlers on Portuguese territory in the middle of the eight century BC. | por |
