as informações anteriores.
In the latest twenty five years of the 20 th century the interest for the intercultural studies increased, and many works were developed by researchers of diverse social sciences and different countries. Many of these studies were ethnocentric, specially those about families and children, because they were analysis based on the western white middle class families model. How ever, some of them showed a different organization of child rearing ideologies and practices depending of social values and internal characteristics of families that vary between societies, cultures and even families and can be identified through the "Adaptive Adult" image metaphor (Roer-Strier, 1996). During an immigration process the families can be confronted with different child rearing ideologies and practices, witch raise difficulties in their integration in the hostage society. The main purpose of our study was to identify the representations of the "Adaptive Adult" image in the students of a Portuguese college belonging to different ethnic groups: African, Indian and Portuguese. We gave to out sample of sixty two subjects two written surveys. One to determine their socio - economic status and the other to identify their representations of the "Adaptive Adult" image, witch included two questions: "As a father or a mother, now or in the future, what do you wish for your children ?" and "What characteristics should your children improve to fulfil their adult tasks ?". Because their answers were not always truly understand by us, we interviewed eight subjects in order to enlighten the informations we had. Our analysis showed the existence of same differences in the representations of the "Adaptive Adult" image according to the subject's ethnic group and gender.
