Resumo(s)
This paper tests the impact of the importance given to some strategic variables by the Portuguese financial services industry on its economic performance. We found that the attention given to strategic variables is positively associated with profitability and negatively associated with firms' cash flows. This negative relation is likely to be a result of both a recent investment in new technology and an increasing competitive environment within the Portuguese financial services industry. The results, although significant for the entire industry, have a different pattern when banks are segregated from insurance companies. We found empirical evidence of the relevance of strategic variables for the economic performance of the Portuguese financial services industry
