Events have been emerging as a determining factor in the promotion of destinies, in the ability to enhance the visitors’ experience and in the boosting of the tourism sector and the economy as a whole. They are also an efficient means of dissemination and interaction of cultures on a global scale. Cultural events emerge as a growing trend worldwide, covering a variety of areas of activity and markets. The challenges associated with this segment of events are manifold, ranging from growing competition to the constant need for innovation, the need to respond to an increasingly informed and demanding audience and the investment in new niches and customization. This investigation was aimed at analysing the touristic relevance of the great events based on an exotic theme emerging nowadays, the Japanese pop culture, studying them on an international scale, but with particular emphasis in Portugal. In addition, the intention was to present contributions to the enhancement of these events and to reinforce the synergies between Japan and other destinations where this type of events presents greater expression, understanding and reinforcing the benefits and opportunities of these events for the relations between cultures. In this context, based on a careful bibliographical review, an empirical investigation is carried out supported by the application of interviews to various stakeholders in the sphere of Japanese pop culture events, a questionnaire directed at the participants of these events as well as by direct observations of various events of this theme. The results allow us to verify that these events are relevant to the tourist dynamics of destinations, with beneficial impacts for all associated parties. These events, in addition to being an important communication and promotion strategy for Japan, directly affect tourism supply and demand, promoting travel through their unique, multifaceted, differentiating, and active experiences. Even though the main influx of these events is still domestic tourism, they can easily motivate crowds to visit the event, offering countless positive consequences for the host destination. These moments represent efficient means to promote cultural diversity and identity, enhance the image of the destination and offer positive moments to the tourist, in addition to stimulating the motivation to undertake tourist trips to international destinations, or even to the place of origin of this culture, Japan. Therefore, it is understood that these events are a promising trend, and the investment in strategies for their enhancement is an asset in tourist destinations.
