O Terreno Finisterra é descrito como um terreno exótico com características paleogeográficas
distintas das típicas unidades do Norte do Gondwana, que compõem o Maciço Ibérico. A diferente
interpretação tectónica das estruturas de primeira ordem Ibéricas (e.g. Zona de Cisalhamento Porto
Tomar), implica uma evolução geodinâmica e paleogeográfica distinta para este terreno. Embora
existam alguns dados petrológicos e geoquímicos para o Terreno Finisterra, o objetivo principal é
fornecer novos dados e reinterpretar o modelo pré-existente.
A análise geoquímica e isotópica revela afinidades entre a maioria das unidades metassedimentares
e a alguns dos diatexitos e ortognaisse. Apenas os diatexitos do sector Porto-Espinho revelam uma
origem com provável mistura de fontes durante o processo fusão e/ou acumulação de melts. Os padrões
de REE e spidergrams para as unidades de alto grau metamórfico indicam que a anatexia, durante o
Varisco, ocorreu com alguma contaminação crustal muito provavelmente durante o pico metamórfico
desta orogenia. Os diagramas discriminantes apontam para uma margem continental ativa e afinidade
de arco-vulcânico, com uma tendência evolutiva para granitoides de fontes de intra-placa. Os litótipos
apresentam também idades modelos entre os 1.51 e 2.01 Ga, valores dentro do expectável do Maciço
Ibérico.
Os novos dados geocronológicos do soco subjacente à Bacia Lusitânica apontam para uma
herança/fonte predominantemente Cadomiana/Pan-Africana e Eburneana, posicionando este terreno
como um domínio peri-gondwânico. No entanto, duas grandes diferenças podem ser observadas nos
padrões de distribuição de idades U-Pb em zircão detrítico e herdado: amostras com clara ausência de
idades mesoproterozóicas vs amostras com clara presença destas idades e ainda do Silúrico-Devónico.
Se as primeiras apresentam claros sinais de afinidade com a Zona Ossa-Morena, as últimas assemelhamse à Zona Sul Portuguesa, sendo uma das amostras, provavelmente depositada no Devónico
Superior/Carbónico Inferior, interpretada como tendo origem mista. A integração dos vários dados
aponta para muitas semelhanças dos sectores estudados com algumas zonas tectonostratigráficas do
Maciço Ibérico.
The Finisterra Terrain is described as an exotic terrain with paleogeographic characteristics distinct from the typical units of Northern Gondwana, which comprise the Iberian Massif. The different tectonic and structural interpretation of the first-order Iberian structures (Porto Tomar Shear Zone) implies a distinct geodynamic and paleogeographic evolution for this terrain. Although some petrological and geochemical data do exist for the Finisterra Terrain, the main objective is to provide new data and reinterpret the pre-existing model. Geochemical and isotopic analysis reveals affinities between most of the metasedimentary units and some of the diatexites and orthogneisses. Only the diatexites from the Porto-Espinho sector show an origin likely involving a mixture of sources during the melting process and/or accumulation of melts. The REE patterns and spidergrams for the high-grade metamorphic units indicate that anatexis during the Variscan orogeny occurred with some crustal contamination, most likely during the metamorphic peak of this orogeny. Trace element discrimination diagrams point to an active continental margin and volcanic-arc affinity, with an evolutionary trend towards intra-plate granite sources. The lithotypes also show model ages between 1.51 and 2.01 Ga, values consistent with those expected for the Iberian Massif. New geochronological data from the basement underlying the Lusitanian Basin suggest a predominantly Cadomian/Pan-African and Eburnean inheritance/source, positioning this terrain as a peri-Gondwanan domain. However, two major differences can be observed in the U-Pb age distribution patterns in detrital and inherited zircon: samples with a clear absence of Mesoproterozoic ages vs samples with a clear presence of these and Silurian-Devonian ages.
