Abstract(s)
Evaluation of the agronomic characteristics of sweet cherry ‘De Saco’ cultivar in the Cova da Beira region
Being aware of the economic and social importance of the sweet cherry orchards at the Cova da Beira, the agronomic characteristics of the regional cultivar ‘De Saco’ in four orchards were evaluated and it was established a comparison with other foreign cultivars with the same ripening period at the North of the Gardunha Mountain.
Different external factors (soil, climate, exposure and altitude) were considered in orchards with the same rootstock, cultivar, age and similar cultural practices. The blossom period of ‘De Saco’ cultivar was between the 30th March and the 17th April of 2006, and based on the CTFIL fruit evaluation, the fruits showed high levels of firmness (70.2 durofel) and TSS content (20.6ºBrix) and low acidity (7.2 g of malic acid per liter) with significant differences between the orchards. Establishing a comparison with foreign cultivars with the same ripening period, ‘Lapins’ and ‘Summit’ had higher fruit mass and fruit diameter, while ‘Skeena’ and ‘Satin’ showed higher values of firmness and acidity.
Complementary, an economic study of the traditional cherry orchard was carried out, sweet cherry orchard stand for an income of 7215.3€/ha with a total production cost of 6401.9€/ha. An investment analysis of a modern sweet cherry orchard showed a NPV of 11100.30€/ha at the 9th year.
