O presente trabalho é o resultado de um processo de investigação que incide
sobre a profissão de professor do ensino liceal onde caracterizamos, de uma forma
geral, o caso do Liceu de Portalegre (1851-1963) e o caso particular de um dos seus
docentes: António Raul Galiano Tavares. Este último movimenta-se no interior do arco
temporal já assinalado, especificamente desde a década de 20, do século passado, até
aos anos sessenta.
Procuramos colocar em evidência a importância da figura do professor dentro da
Escola, na relação com a mesma e com a comunidade envolvente.
Neste sentido optamos por, numa primeira fase, caracterizar o corpo docente do
Liceu de Portalegre internamente e, depois, dar o exemplo de um professor: Galiano
Tavares. Este último irá permitir-nos perspectivar novos caminhos de análise da
profissão docente, através do seu protagonismo público na comunidade onde se
movimenta.
Olhamos para o professor do ensino liceal como um agente educativo onde se
cruzam interesses culturais, políticos ou sociais. Deste modo, em nosso entender, se
constrói a sua própria identidade.
This study is the result of a research process regarding the high school teacher’s job. We characterise Portalegre’s high school between the 1850’s and 1960’s, in general, and one of its teachers in particular: Antonio Raul Galiano Tavares (1923- 1963). We aimed to stand out the importance of the teacher’s role at the school and its relation with it and the surrounding community. Following these guidelines, we decided to characterise the group of teachers of Portalegre’s high school first, and then focus on one of its teachers: Galiano Tavares. This teacher will allow us to foresee new methods of analysis of a teacher’s job, through its public acting in the community where he belongs. We see the high school teacher as an educational agent with cultural, political and social interests. We believe that, this is how he constructs his own identity.
