Abstract(s)
The expectation that men and women should have different sexual behaviors and be differently evaluated when they engage in such sexual activities, that is, the sexual double standard, has been changing. However, there are indications that women continue to inhibit their sexual experience in a more pronounced way than men. This study aims to deepen the current contours of this concept. For this purpose group interviews with male college students were carried out to find out their perception about possible differences in how men and women experience their sexuality. Through the methodology of focus groups and a qualitative analysis that appealed to the grounded theory these findings suggest that the sexual double standard is mainly manifested in the multiplicity of partners, not in engaging in casual relationships and, in committed relationships, gender differences arose in terms of power and authority, which we call a relational double standard. These findings suggest the importance of a reformulation of the concept under study.
