o presente estudo realizou-se com o objectivo de identificar processos de medição
de superfícies e dos conceitos a ela associados, a referir, o conceito de unidade,
conservação da área e iteração da unidade, com o propósito de perceber as estratégias
usadas pelos alunos e, deste modo, contribuir para uma mudança no ensino deste tema
nos anos iniciais da escolaridade. Pretendeu-se, ainda, identificar a influência da forma
da unidade, na noção de conceito e conservação de área em crianças do 1° Ciclo do
Ensino Básico.
Foi usado um tipo de investigação de natureza qualitativa, na modalidade de
estudo de caso.
A amostra era constituída por 18 alunos do 2º ano do 1° CEB, por ainda não terem
trabalhado o 'conceito de área'.
Os dados foram recolhidos através de questionários de conceitos e de tarefas
realizadas pelos alunos. Os resultados obtidos foram descritivos e ilustrados com
algumas das respostas dos alunos e organizados em quadros, verificando-se que os
alunos não são consistentes nas suas respostas, o que pressupõe usarem diversos
processos cognitivos para o mesmo tipo de tarefa.

No que respeita às conclusões, tiradas a partir dos resultados obtidos, emergem
algumas implicações para o currículo e para as práticas lectivas dos professores. São
feitas algumas sugestões para iniciar o ensino-aprendizagem do conceito de área no
Ciclo do Ensino Básico.
The following study was carried out in order to identify surface measurement processes and concepts with it associated, namely, the concept of unit, area conservation and iteration of the unit, with the purpose of understanding the strategies used by primary school pupils. Furthermore, the intention was to identify the influence of the shape of the unit, considering the notion of concept and area conservation in order to contribute towards a change in the teaching of this subject in early school years. The sample was constituted by 18 pupils from second grade primary school, for they had not yet worked on the "concept of area". The data were assembled through concepts questionnaires and tasks performed by pupils. The results were descriptive, illustrated with some of the pupils' answers and organized in tables, having been verifiable that the pupils are not consistent in their answers; this implies that different cognitive processes for the same kind of task were used. Regarding the conclusions, drawn from the results, some implications for the curriculum and for the teacher's academic procedures emerge. Some suggestions are made to initiate the teaching-learning of the concept of area in primary school.
