Resumo(s)

We find two different kinds of reference of the word manes in the grammatical texts: the first, which is the chronologically earlier one, is from an encyclopaedic or lexicographic perspective, that can be seen in the work of Verrius Flaccus (De significatu verborum), Festus (De significatione verborum) and the epitome by Paulus Diaconus. These texts are related to the recollection of words and their etymological and semantic explanation, in correlation with other words (e.g. Maniae, Mater Matuta and others, as we shall see below). These words are mentioned in a grammatical work that gathers antique and archaic words, that need to be explained or are otherwise included as the objects of clarification in Ist century A.D. and later, not because they were at risk of disappearing, but because their meaning was changing at that time (this was the case of the Manes, as can be seen by the high number of its epigraphic occurrences since then). Not only that, the connection to literature, philosophy, and religion justifies the ongoing debate concerning the origins and semantic aspects of these words. The second perspective is concerned with the morphological aspects, specifically between the flexion in number (singular and plural) and gender, although some occurrences, which we will not discuss here, are related to the literary examples quoted concerning syntax. From this perspective, the word Manes is seen as typical and familiar for speakers of Latin language.
