The pre and post graduate education of clinical pharmacy in Europe : enseignement de la Pharmacie clinique in Europe

ln the middle of the 1940’s decade, activities in some services were already put in practice in hospital pharmacies of Lisbon (University Hospital and the Navy Hospital) wich conform today with in what is called ‘Clinical Pharmacy”, with the integration of the Pharmacist on the medicaL team, as ‘drug specialist’, especially in the subject of technology and information. In the introduction of work, the author refers summarily to the countries whose educationat curriculum in pharmacy have a Chair of Clinical Pharmacy, it’s locaLization in the course and duration. Also, mentioning the training (obligatory in some countties and in the directives of the EEC) giving some details, featuring the hospital’s training of 72 months, recently introduced into French education, in which predominate ctinicaL pharmacy activities.
By the way, pre-graduate education is verified presently at the European level, though few countries have a differentiated Chair, emphasizing however the “modules” of the area of clinical pharmacy, in the 4th year of French education ; and among ourselves, the reform of the Faculty of Coimbra in which will
function the first Chair of clinical pharmacy in 1987.
This in spite of the recomnendations of English and American experts in the sense of it’s inclusion in the basic curriculum. In this orientation the A. suggests a “sphere or field of action” for a Chair of Clinical Pharmacy integrated into to current curriculum of the Portuguese Faculties of Pharmacy, in the last year and as a complement of the Hospital Pharmacy already existing.
