Abstract(s)

Bioinformatics aims at understanding living systems using biological information. We see it as a subset of Computational Biology that deals specifically with the biological problems where knowledge can be gained from the information that we can extract from Biology. These problems arise at all levels and scales of observation, from molecules to systems. BKDB2005 is a forum for presentation and discussion of current work and new advances in Bioinformatics. This workshop explored directions of future research and facilitated collaboration between researchers, developers, practitioners and students. This volume contains the papers presented at the BKDB2005 workshop held at the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa on June 17, 2005. After a careful revision of the 20 paper submissions, the program committee has selected 10 papers for oral presentation and 5 others for a joint presentation in a poster session. Two invited presentations were given by Roderic Guigó and Marie-France Sagot. The organizers hope that this is only the first of a series of regular events. Knowledge discovery using Bioinformatics is unstoppable!
