Resumo(s)
The IT Department of the Central Services of the University of Lisbon has been growing over the last
years. This expansion has brought about heightened complexity in the IT network, leading to challenges
in achieving comprehensive visibility over assets within a unified platform.. Therefore, it is imperious to
implement and maintain a CMDB (Configuration Management Database).
A CMDB allows the identification of the assets under the supervision of the Central Services, giving
them greater visibility and being able to assist in more efficient problem resolution, thereby reducing
asset’s downtime.
This solution brings automation to routines that ensure the inventory remains consistently updated. It
provides a centralized source of information, mitigating the use of multiple non-standardized sources and
ensuring that information is consolidated within a single platform. One of the advantages of a CMDB is
precisely to avoid switching between different sources of information.
This work is intended to analyze the several tools that are available in the market and based on
different evaluation criteria, arrive at the one that best adapts to the requirements that are going to be
identified. A score is to be assigned to each software in order to facilitate the solution’s choice.
During this project, several tools and its features are tested in a real environment, as this is the only
way to respond to the challenge of having software that is dynamic, in other words, constantly updated,
and that can be connected to other systems.
After the selection phase, the information made available carries great importance for the daily
activity of the IT Department, thus, it becomes easier to understand the impact that a change in one
service triggers in other services.
This approach facilitates enhanced visibility into virtual machines and services within the University
of Lisbon systems.
