Resumo(s)

This report, which deals with the devising of timetables at a Portuguese secondary school, begins with a survey of related problems, together with respective formulations and solving methodologies. Following the explanation of the secondary school class timetabling problem, the issue targeted is formulated as a binary nonlinear programming problem, which is then illustrated with an instance corresponding to a small-scale hypothetical school. The final output for this instance consists of timetables for teachers and classes. The report concludes with comments on the applicability of this formulation in the development of neural network based heuristics for the building of timetables .
