Abstract: The primary objective of this thesis is to demonstrate the existence of the letter in Portuguese Royal Chancellery which began with the reign of King John I and that was used until the reign of King Manuel I. For this reason, we decided to review the documents that we found between the dates of 1370-1420, which we believe are sufficient to prove and characterize the existence of this letter, that the Professor Borges Nunes liked to call “Letra Joanina”. Before analyzing the letter, we decided to introduce two theoretical chapters, one on the Historical context of XIV and XV centuries and another on matters essentially within the terminology of paleography.
