Este texto pretende abordar o painel cerâmico realizado por Manuel Lima (1911-1991), em 1973, para decoração do então ampliado Hospital do Ultramar, em Lisboa (actual Hospital Egas Moniz). A análise da composição considera a conjuntura sociopolítica de então, cruzando-a com as opções iconográficas tomadas pelo artista e com a integração no espaço arquitectónico para o qual o painel foi concebido. É objetivo deste artigo contribuir para uma reflexão acerca da apropriação das artes plásticas pelo poder político para veiculação de mensagens ideológicas, concretamente no período do Estado Novo.
This text aims to address the ceramic panel created by Manuel Lima (1911-1991) in 1973 to decorate the then expanded Hospital do Ultramar (Overseas Hospital; today Hospital Egas Moniz), in Lisbon. The analysis of the composition considers the socio-political conjuncture of the time, crossing it with the iconographic options taken by the artist and with the integration in the architectural space for which the panel was designed. The purpose of this article is to contribute to a reflection on the appropriation of visual arts by political power in order to convey ideological messages, specifically during the Estado Novo regime.
